What physical mechanism determines whether three atoms bond in a linear arrangement or in an angular conformation?

Do we need quantum mechanics to explain this?

Would classiscal electrostatics be sufficient?

These are the scientific questions we ask in this project. We search in the literature for experimental and calculated three atomic bond angles and compare them to angles we determined with full valence CASSCF calculations.
